❧ Character Information ❧
Character’s Full Name: Princess Belle
Fandom: Beauty and the Beast
Are they from (an anime, book, manga, video game, etc.): A movie.
Age of Character: 18
Point in Canon: After she breaks the spell on the Beast/Prince Adam (otherwise known as the famous West Wing balcony scene).
۞ History:
Her story.
۞ Personality:
Before Belle even meets the Beast, she is depicted as someone who stands apart from regular society. In fact, during the first song of the movie, she is described as a strange girl who always has her nose stuck in a book. In modern times, reading excessively (or even at all) wouldn't be considered strange. However, in Belle's era (which is roughly around the same time as the Hunchback of Notre Dame), women have a very defined arena in society - and Belle breaks those definitions by: A.) Not showing romantic interest in any men and B.) Reading and building her imagination. It's clear that both qualities are considered odd (and maybe even dangerous) in her little village. However, Belle pays them no mind - thus displaying that she is a strong and surprisingly independent woman for her era.
Despite her strength and independence, however, Belle is one of the kindest people you will ever meet. When she is at ease with someone (as seen later on in the movie), she has no problem sharing her interests and even laughing at bit at the expense of others (or herself). Yet, when she is uncomfortable or even annoyed by someone, her kindness melts away. In fact, she can be quite tempestuous (and, not to mention, mischievous) when the wrong strings are pulled. For example, Gaston seems to consistently put his foot in his mouth when he is around her; Belle will have none of it. She even lies to him in order to get rid of him - something I'm sure she doesn't like doing with anyone else (including the Beast).
After she meets the Beast, Belle displays that not only can she hold her own with his roaring (thanks to her tempestuous side) but that she can also succumb (quite easily) to the temptation of her own curiosity. The last attribute is the one that gets her into trouble. Simply put, she will not follow the rules or abide by the wishes of her captor/host.
Yet, I think her rebellious actions can be blamed more on her need for adventure and less on her desire to upset the Beast. Belle is quite the dreamer, after all. She can't stand to not know what's behind a door or hidden away in a forest. Occasionally, she loses her common sense in pursuit of an adventure that she has longed for since she was a child.
After Cupid's arrow meets its mark, however, Belle begins to realize how her curiosity might hurt the Beast. She makes a concerted effort to think about his feelings before doing anything. In that way, the pair seem to mature together. The dreamy, doe-eyed girl that Belle used to be is a figment of the past when she is around Beast. He becomes everything she ever dreamed about and it isn't long before she understands that she truly loves him.
۞ Magical Powers, Skills, and Weapons:
N/A
۞ Other Abilities:
Her Wiki states all of her abilities quite well: "Most of Belle's abilities are based on knowledge and intelligence, instead of physical strength.
One of Belle's more obvious abilities is her use of vocabulary. Possibly due to her love of books and constant reading, Belle is able to call out many words off the top of her head and use them in the correct context in order to prove a point or state a fact, such as "primeval" and "provincial".
Belle is quite witty, and is able to use this trait to her advantage. When in an argument with the Beast, Belle was able to hold her ground and challenge each of the Beast's points with a cunning comeback, such as "If you hadn't frightened me I wouldn't have run away", or "You should learn to control your temper." Each of these facts left the Beast stunned and at a loss for words. Belle managed to think of these combacks without much thought or hesitation. When Lumière and Cogsworth were attempting to lead Belle's curiosity away from the West Wing, she challenged them by saying the West Wing wouldn't be forbidden if the Beast wasn't hiding something in it, also briefly stunning them.
Belle has a strong sense of character, and is able to use this trait in a variety of ways, even to her own advantage. On Belle's first night in the castle, following the "Be Our Guest" sequence, she develops an urge to explore the castle, and asks for a guide. Observing Cogsworth's "authoritative" personality, she immediately knows that Cogsworth would be the best candidate. At first, Cogsworth is quite reluctant of the idea, but when Belle says she's sure he knows everything about the castle, he agrees.
Although Belle is quite ignorant of her own beauty, she does somewhat manage to use her feminine charm to her advantage. When Gaston proposed to Belle, she pretended to be clueless and at a loss for words, however, she was secretly leading Gaston toward the door, and when cornered against it, opened it and sent him flying into a mud pond.
Although Belle displays few athletic abilities, she is able to ride a horse at quite stunning speeds with ease and skill, and subconsciously navigate her way through a crowded street while reading, without colliding with any other people or objects (although having several near-misses)."
Therefore Belle is a surprising mixture of intelligence (for her era/gender), charisma, mischief and adventurism with a hint of athleticism (when it comes to riding). She is also empathetic when it comes to interacting with others. She is also quite loyal - especially when it comes to family/friends (the line between the two often overlaps in her case). Additionally, she is well-read (at least when it comes to French literature) and well-versed in etiquette. (I like to think she learned her etiquette from her mother, but I have no canon proof of that.)
She definitely isn't a "run-of-the-mill" "Princess".
۞ Journal Sample:
Shhh, it's alright. I know you were worried about me, but I'm home now. I will take care of you until you feel better. But, then, I have somewhere else to be, Papa. { Belle strokes over the back of her father's hand, speaking to him gently. } He's really very kind. You wouldn't believe how much he has changed. And...I love him, Papa. { Small tears enter her eyes. } He isn't who you imagined me loving, is he? But you'll see. I know you will. He has such a kind heart.
{ Exhaling shakily, she grabs a damp cloth and dabs at his forehead. } It was hard leaving him. { She grimaces. } I saw you in his Mirror and I was so frightened that I would lose you. I think he saw how scared I was. That's why he let me go.
{ Leaning over, Belle kisses her father's brow, frowning worriedly at him. } Please wake up, Papa. I don't know what I would do if I lost you. [The words stick in her throat.] Would you like to hear a story? Here, let me read one to you...
Second Sample: [This is based on a nightmare Belle had.]
{ Once again, she is riding through a dark forest. As she passes by the trees, they seem to reach out for her, beckoning her to go forward. Belle watches them cautiously, keeping a tight hold on Phillipe's reins. }
Did Papa come this way? { The horse snorts and paws at the ground. } I know this isn't easy, but we need to find him before it's too late.
{ She pulls the horse to a halt and observes a fork in the road before them. The fork used to be illegible, but now the writing is quite clear. }
Forward...and back. What does that mean? [Belle dismounts and walks closer to the sign.] There are no towns named that. I'm sure of it. { She turns to face Phillipe and freezes. The clydesdale is missing. }
Phillipe?! { Running down the path, Belle winces as the trees grab for her cloak. } Leave me alone! Papa! Phillipe! { She stumbles and falls to the ground. In the not so far distance, a wolf howls. }
N-No. { Shaking, she rights herself and looks for something to use as a weapon. } I won't let you hurt anyone. Not again. { Memories of Beast's injuries fill her mind. } B-Beast. { Her voice quakes as she finally finds a sizable branch. } I'm sorry I left. I wish you were with me right now. I know...together...we could -
{ She whirls around and faces a pack of wolves, praying desperately that this is only a nightmare. }
۞ Third Person Sample: (This was written for a different canon point.)
Leaving the comfort of the castle wasn't easy. The Beast's cry spurred Phillipe on, but it made her heart ache. She wanted to go back to him. Entering a frosty forest was not appealing, yet her father needed her. Need trumped want every single time, especially when it concerned her family.
Reining in the Clydesdale, she bit her lip and looked around desperately.
"Papa!" she called, cupping her hands around her mouth, "Papa, I'm coming!"
I won't let you die! N-Not for me.
Grabbing onto Phillipe's reins again, Belle urged him forward. However, when the horse took one shaky step forward, Belle felt a strange tug. Suddenly, she was not on Phillipe's back or in the snow white forest. Shaking, she rose to her feet and pushed her cloak back.
"Phillipe?"
Even as she called for him, she knew it was pointless. He wasn't here. Smoothing down her skirt, Belle frowned pensively, trying to get a grip on things. Maybe she was dreaming? Maybe she had hit her head and -
"Hello?" her voice broke, "Papa..."
She had to wake up! If she didn't... Her heart sunk.
No. Don't you dare give up! She chastised herself, beginning to pace.
Second Sample:
As the last petal fell, Belle felt her heart ache. She didn't even need to look to know...it was too late. The only man she had ever loved was now... Was now...
Clinging to the Beast's torn shirt, her sobs renewed. The tears rolled down her cheeks and soaked his shirt. She should have never left. But then, her father would be...like this. How could anyone expect her to choose between the two people she loved the most in her life? She hadn't known. She had wanted to come back to see him smiling - not...
Don't leave me. Please don't leave me. Her hands ached from holding onto him so tightly. She loosened her grip the slightest bit, but she refused to move an inch. He was still warm. As long as his warmth lasted, she would be right here to make sure it lasted as long as possible.
However her plan was cut short when he started to...rise. Blinking in wonder, Belle gasped and clutched at her cloak. What was that light? Why was it becoming brighter?
Beast... Even her mental voice was little more than a whimper. She wanted to reach out for him, yet she couldn't help but hope that...perhaps...this was a good sign. Just about anything was better than him being...gone, after all.
...changing? Her eyes widened as she saw, through the flashes of light, the Beast's body...transforming. The moment his body was lowered to the ground, Belle was by his side, feeling a tentative hope. But before her hand could touch him, he...moved.
He was alive. Belle blinked back more tears - this time tears of relief - and waited, breathlessly, to see his face; the face she had come to love so much.
